Orthopaedic Surgery

As a founding member of the Hungarian Pet Orthopaedic Society, Dr. László Laczkó has been involved in pet orthopaedic surgery for more than three decades, committed to improving the quality of life of pets. Decades of experience and ongoing professional training allow us to use the latest techniques and tools to provide assistance.

In the field of orthopaedic surgery, we encounter many common problems, such as cruciate ligament tears, which occur mainly in medium to large dogs. In addition, hip joint dysplasia is also a major problem, especially in breeds such as the Labrador Retriever and the German Shepherd. Elbow dysplasia, which is primarily responsible for lameness and joint pain in young dogs, is also a common cause of surgical procedures.

Accidental bone fractures and dislocations, as well as patellofemoral and degenerative joint diseases, are also major challenges for us. Our surgical care aims to restore musculoskeletal function, reduce pain and ensure long-term mobility.

Common Orthopaedic Diseases in Dogs:

  • Rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ligamentum cruciatum ruptura): In medium to large dogs, it is associated with lameness and pain.
  • Hip joint dysplasia: It mainly occurs in large breeds, such as German Shepherds and Labradors, due to defective joint development.
  • Book publishing: A malformation of the elbow joint that causes lameness and arthritis.
  • Patellofibromy (patellar sprain): Common in small breeds such as chihuahuas and Yorkshire terriers.
  • Bone fractures: Due to accidents or trauma, they require surgical fixation.
  • Osteoarthritis (arthritis): A degenerative disease that worsens with age, causing chronic pain.
  • Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD): A developmental disorder of the cartilaginous parts of the joints, mainly in young, large dogs.

Healing Interventions:

The following surgical procedures, which are recognised in the international literature, are routinely performed:

  • TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy): Surgery to treat a cruciate ligament tear and stabilise the knee joint.
  • FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy): Removal of the femoral head, especially in cases of hip dysplasia or Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease.
  • Patellofemoral surgery: Repair of the patella dislocation, combined with strengthening of the surrounding tissues and remodelling of the bone flaps.
  • Plate osteosynthesis: Stabilize fractures with plates, screws and pins.
  • Arthroscopy: Minimally invasive surgery to diagnose and treat joints, often for elbow dysplasia or joint cartilage separation.
  • OCD (Osteochondritis Dissecans) surgery: Removal of dead cartilage and smoothing of the articular surface in young dogs.
  • Corrective surgery: Correction of deformities of the limbs, such as curvatures or deformities
