Diagnosis of spinal diseases

Diagnosis of spinal diseases

In our animal hospital, the diagnosis of spinal diseases in dogs is a high priority, as this group of diseases can have a wide range of serious symptoms and consequences. Spinal problems such as herniated discs, spinal tumours and degenerative spinal diseases can cause not only pain but also limited mobility and even paralysis. This is why early detection and intervention are essential.

Diagnostic Process

The diagnostic process for spinal disorders in dogs involves the following steps:

  1. Physical Examination:
Our orthopaedic specialists perform a detailed physical examination, which allows a thorough assessment of the dog's general condition, movement and neurological functions. During the examination, we monitor the dog's gait, muscle tone, reflexes and pain responses. This information helps to identify problem areas and pinpoint the source of possible pain.
  2. Diagnostic Imaging:
After the physical examination, various imaging techniques are used to evaluate the spine and surrounding tissues in detail. The most commonly used tests include:
    • X-rays: X-rays are useful for a basic examination of the structure of the spine, helping to identify fractures, degenerations and bone injuries.
    • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): MRI allows detailed imaging of soft tissues such as the discs and spinal cord and helps diagnose tumours or inflammation.
    • Computed tomography (CT): CT scans provide a three-dimensional view of the spinal column and surrounding structures, which can be particularly useful in more complex cases.

Diagnosis Establishment

Once a diagnosis has been made, our orthopaedic specialists offer a wide range of treatment options for dogs with spinal problems:

  1. Conservative Treatment Approaches:
The primary goal of conservative treatment methods is to reduce pain and restore movement. These include:
    • Anti-inflammatory Drugs: Medication is used exclusively with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce inflammation and pain.
    • Physiotherapy and rehabilitation: Physiotherapy treatments, including massage, electrostimulation and hydrotherapy, laser therapy, all help to restore movement while strengthening muscles and improving the overall well-being of the animal. The type and course of therapy is always decided by the physiotherapist on the basis of professional criteria.

  1. Surgical Interventions:
If conservative treatment methods are not sufficient, our orthopaedic specialists may recommend surgical intervention to treat spinal problems. These may include:
    • Surgical Management of Hernia: In severe cases, a herniated disc may require surgery to replace the removed disc with a stabilisation procedure.
    • Removal of tumours: Surgical removal of spinal tumours can help not only to reduce pain, but also to restore nerve function.
    • Spine Stabilisation Surgeries: Surgery to treat spinal instability is performed to stabilise the spine and prevent further injury.
