Pacemaker implantation

Pacemaker
Pacemaker implantation is a procedure that allows the treatment of heart rhythm disorders in dogs. This intervention plays an extremely important role in improving the quality of life of animals with heart disease and in preventing complications in the near future. Currently, the Budatétény Animal Hospital is the only place in Hungary where pacemaker implantation for dogs is performed with decades of experience, providing the opportunity to use this modern technology in both routine and complex cases.
The pacemaker implantation procedure:
Pacemaker implantation involves several steps and requires a high level of professionalism and precision technique.
- Getting started:Prior to the procedure, the patient undergoes a thorough clinical examination, including a physical examination, blood tests and any necessary diagnostic imaging (e.g. X-ray, ECG, ultrasound). These tests are designed to identify the cause of the arrhythmia and minimise the risk of the procedure.
- Preparation:The dog will be anaesthetised prior to implantation. During anaesthesia, we monitor the breathing and heart rate to ensure the animal is stable. Antiseptic cleaning of the operating area and proper sterilisation are key to avoid postoperative infections.
- Intervention:During the pacemaker implantation, a small incision is made in the dog's chest to allow the pacemaker to be implanted. The device is carefully connected to the heart and checked to make sure it is working properly. It is important that the pacemaker is accurately positioned next to the anatomical structures to ensure effective regulation of the heart rhythm.
- Post-operative care:After the procedure, the dog is closely monitored to ensure that the healing process is not interrupted. During post-operative care, attention is paid to pain relief, wound healing and continuous monitoring of heart rhythm stability. The animal also needs follow-up checks to ensure optimal pacemaker function.
- Monitoring and control:Monitoring pacemaker function requires regular checks. During the clinical check-up, an ECG is taken and the device is tested at regular intervals to make sure that the animal is responding well to treatment and that the pacemaker is working smoothly.
With these types of procedures, professional experience, state-of-the-art technology and scientific background are essential to improve the quality of life of dogs and to respond appropriately to the challenges of pacemaking.
