Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy

In our clinic - uniquely in Hungary - we perform fluoroscopic examinations, which are primarily used for detailed evaluation of the function of the oesophagus. This method may also be necessary for the diagnosis of congenital disorders such as oesophageal stricture, partial dilatation (diverticulum formation) or oesophageal stricture (ductus arteriosus Botalli) caused by residual vascular anomalies.

Fluoroscopic examination is also useful in detecting acquired diseases such as stenosis caused by subsequent scarring of the oesophagus from feeding tube injury in youth, or megaoesophagus and pharyngeal muscle dysfunction and malabsorption disorders in adulthood or old age.

During the test, the animal is awake and is fed a contrast media-mixed pulp diet, the passage of which into the stomach is continuously monitored by an X-ray fluoroscope screen. To be successful, the test requires a calm and cooperative animal that can be handled, as the animal must lie on its side as it swallows the food. It is important to note that biting animals cannot be examined and owners must not be present during the examination.

It is important to note that the test cannot be performed under anaesthesia or sedation, and a complete fasting period of 24 hours prior to the procedure is recommended to ensure successful and diagnostically valid images.
