MKOE dysplasia screening

MKOE dysplasia screenings

Since its foundation, the Hungarian Pet Orthopaedic Association (MKOE) has paid special attention to the prevention and early diagnosis of orthopaedic diseases in dogs, especially in the field of dysplasia. Dr. László Laczkó, one of the founding members of the association, builds on his professional experience and dedication to the dysplasia screening programme, which targets the early detection of genetic disorders such as hip, elbow and shoulder dysplasias.

Dysplasia and the importance of screening

Dysplasia is a developmental disorder that is common in small and large dogs, especially in the hip and elbow joints. These abnormalities can lead to painful conditions that seriously affect the quality of life and mobility of dogs. Early diagnosis is essential to develop an effective treatment plan and the MKOE screening programme aims to systematically detect dogs at risk of developing dysplasia.

Filtering process

  1. Preliminary Assessment:
The first step is to take a thorough history, during which the vet will gather detailed information about the dog's medical history, movement patterns and any previous joint problems. This is followed by a physical examination to assess joint movement and stability.
  2. Imaging Tests:
Imaging procedures are used to confirm the diagnosis of dysplasia, most commonly X-rays. X-rays allow a detailed examination of the structure of the joints and possible lesions. Dr. László Laczko and his team pay particular attention to the accurate evaluation of the X-rays, ensuring a precise diagnosis.
  3. Referral and Advice:
If dysplasia is suspected, colleagues will provide the owner with detailed information about the diagnosis and possible treatment options.

The result of the screening

The data obtained from screening not only provides useful information for individual dogs, but also contributes to the general knowledge of dysplasia prevalence at breed and individual level. These data will help to inform breeding decisions, allowing the risk of dysplasia to be reduced in future generations.
